Dr. Jamie Crooks is the chair of the Philosophy Department at Bishop's University. He studied music at Mount Allison University before undertaking graduate work in philosophy at the University of Toronto. He obtained his Ph.D. in 1990 with a dissertation on Heidegger's interpretation of Nietzsche. Dr. Crooks is also conductor of the Bishop's University Singers and has worked regularly with the Drama department over the past four years on musical theatre projects. His talk discusses a project called "Phoenix Rising": last year Dr. Crooks and his Bishop's University Singers collaborated with members of a homeless youth shelter, Phoenix House, to develop a super choir: Dr. Crooks's talk explores the interconnectedness of philosophy, music, social activism, and community building. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
