From Steve: "The Iconic Fuzz Face, One of the greatest pedals ever made, but not without its quirks. The Buffalo FX Germanium Fuzz recreates the classic tones of the Fuzz Face and address's the quirks with additional control over transistor voltage and pre-gain. Powered by a pair of gold Lead NOS Texas Instrument 2N404 transistors. These are matched for gain then selected by ear in a simulator pedal that allows me to choose between 16 different pair combinations. Overkill? No. Sonically, this is the last 5%. Most transistors that meet the right requirements will sound good, but some sound better together, and this is where I find them. The 2N404 gives the pedal plenty of punch in comparison to many transistors and has one of the nicest guitar volume clean-ups I've heard. The age old problem of fluctuating ambient temperatures can be easily managed by tweaking the bias control to the required voltage. In addition to being able to adjust the voltage to the classic 4-5v lowering the voltage will yield a more spitty and gated effect, higher voltages produce a fatter more congested type of fuzz. Pre-gain, when fully clockwise is what you'd expect from a traditional fuzz face style pedal. Roll it back slightly to clean up the loose low end but still keep the character. Keep going and your into overdrive territory. Other than a tone shaping tool this is also very useful when using high output or active pickups. I've used Vishay BC and Vishay Roederstein Capacitors with metal film resistors for low noise operation. All cabling is heavy guage with screened input and outputs. Jacks are Neutrik. Side mounted battery drawer saves you looking for your screwdriver when it needs changing, top mount jacks for space saving and a 9v dc power socket. All housed in a die-cast aluminium enclosure which is powder coated and screen printed in house by myself. Specifications 100% Handmade NOS Texas Instrument gold lead 2N404's. This pedal runs on a positive ground. The polarity has been changed inside the pedal therefore no special adaptors or supplies are needed. Just a standard boss type 9v centre negative. However, 95% of the time you won't be able to share (daisy chain) the supply with other pedals as most pedals are negative ground. I recommend Voodoo lab or an equivalent high quality isolated power supply for best results."
